South Dakota to get World’s largest Wind Farm?

rockrivershellwindfarm

After the government’s go-ahead to Kent’s world’s largest offshore wind farm and the Contact Energy’s proposed giant wind farm south of Port Waikato this month, it is now the turn of South Dakota to be in the competition to become No.1 in the venture. It may soon witness enough wind turbines in its counties, capable of producing up to 6,000 megawatts of electricity.

Rated the nation’s No. 4 in having the potential capacity to produce electricity from wind, the farm would need at least 2,400 turbines to generate the much required “green” power. The project by Clipper Windpower of California would cost $6 billion.

Though the project – claimed to be eight times larger than the biggest wind farm in the world – may kick up controversies between the environmentalists and the tourism industry, the Great Plains state is surely the windiest of all – a lucrative green energy resource.
