Eco Factor: Energy-efficient light bulbs put out 55 lumens per watt.

Incandescent bulbs waste a major amount of the energy they consume as heat, CFLs save on energy but they pack hazardous chemicals that deplete the environment. RTI International claims to have solved the puzzle with funding from the Department of Energy.

The company is claiming to have come up with a new range of light bulbs that are more efficient than regular lights and are more environmentally friendly than conventional CFLs. Based on nanofibers that have diameters smaller than a human hair, these light emit warm, white light when in contact with electric current.

The company claims that these unique nanofiber lights will put out 55 lumens of light for every watt of power, which is five times more efficient than traditional light bulbs. RTI is planning to roll out the bulbs in another three to five years.
