RFID to control disease-spread in animals

cows need rfid tagging

Amidst increasing diseases in animals, leading to their death and infecting humans, here comes an electronic disease control system. These are wireless radio chips that can help prevent, rather effectively control disease outbreaks, such as hoof and mouth disease and avian flu, among other things.

And US Agriculture Secretary, Mike Johanns recently released a government road map that to help most farmers tag their animals with these chips by 2008. And by 2007, farms or households holding chickens, ducks, turkeys, cows, pigs, goats or horses are required to register with a database, eventually obtaining a 15-digit identification number and GPS coordinate.

Though the RFID industry will surely rake in huge profits from this, RFID tags could even expose individuals to privacy risks, as some critics worry.
