Renewable energy to take care of 80 percent of world’s needs by 2050

The importance of renewable energy cannot be overstressed. With global warming becoming a concern, researchers are looking towards renewable energy sources as a resort to tackle large scale climatic change problems. According to a recent report by United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, renewable energy resources, such as, solar, wind and ocean energy, will account for more than 80 percent of the worlds needs by the year 2050.

The report lays stress on the fact that there is infinite potential for harnessing renewable energy resources. So, the concerned governments have only to formulate favorable policies and invest a considerable amount of financial resources to the effect. New infrastructural facilities will have to be set up for harnessing renewable energy resources.

Governments of various countries will have to sponsor campaigns stressing the positive effects of removing air, water and land pollution. National policies will have to be formulated such that major power grids are forced to employ renewable energy resources for large scale power generation.

According to Ramon Pichs, who co-chaired the report, it’s the developing countries which have large populations living without electric power that such policies will have a tremendous effect. Most of the developing countries have large reserves of renewable energy sources. It is simply a matter of political will. The report discussed and reviewed the possible harnessing of bioenergy, solar, wind and oceanic energy in great detail.
