Recycling traffic lights to make lamps

recycling street lights to make lamps

As concern about the energy is gripping the world at large, innovative ideas are springing up to lessen the burden on the environment. Apparently trivial things ;like traffic lights have also come under scrutiny in the process.

Cities all over the world are using long-lasting LEDs as substitutes for their old-fashioned incandescent signal lights, in order to cut down on energy consumption. However, the good done by them is somewhat dulled by the fact that after their lifetime, they are dumped by he millions in the landfills as recycling them involves exorbitant expenses.

Greenlight Concepts not only conceived of an idea to prevent these used lenses fom being dumped, but showed to the world that recycling them can actually be beneficial. San Francisco designer Daniel Krivens and partner Nicholas Lee’s project is brilliant in its mere simplicity. They are recycling street lamps to design…lamps!

You will just have to check out the red, amber and green lamps they made out of street lamp lenses. Stunning is the word. The icing on the cake is that they are sustainable. Pendant lamps of 8″ or 12″ (there’s even a clear version, rescued from train-traffic signals) run between $240 to $299; the 8″ or 12″ “bucket” versions ($90 to $120) incorporate parchment shades in the design and stand on steel legs.

Their soft glow make them suitable for use as night lamps. Using them in living rooms would undoubtedly give the room an artistic, mystic touch.

Even if we leave aside the style and beauty, these lamps deserve a try just for the innovative idea.
