While I would not tell you that this is something you can easily do at home or give you steps to do it yourself, what I can say is that if you happen to have some free time & lots of egg cartons, then give it a shot. It’s going to be a long shot, but still it’s worth a try. Inna Alesina is an artist, who has decided that all the egg cartons lying around were a waste of paper & also were in dull boring white. So what did this artist do with them? No, she did not throw them in the dump, she recycled the in to footstools (Now, that is why she is an ‘artist’ & I’m not). With each passing day, it is ironic how perceptions of men (in the generic sense) can shape their worlds. Apart from maybe a Mona Lisa or the Last Supper, I would probably even throw some work of modern art in to the trash can as my thick headed empty skull may not even recognize it as art. So, here I am on one hand, throwing away even genuine art as trash (& trust me I’m right on some instances) & then on the other, we have people like Inna; People who craft art out of trash.
Inna decided to make footstools out of old egg cartons by recycling that paper & using water-based fabric color to dye them. These things may not be spectacular, but they are worth their claim. They come in four different colors & give a wonderful feel to the room. They really are unique & have that feeling a piece of art has. The best part about it is that it can be both used as a footstool when placed flat & it moves when placed sideways, as a rocking ottoman. If you have a little kid at your place, he’ll love rolling it around all day. I wonder though, how many art pieces were ever created on which you could lay your feet!
