Radical bicycle sculpture @ Burning Man ‘07

Burning Man is an eight-day annual event that is held in a temporary city called Black Rock City on the playa of the Black Rock Desert in the U.S. state of Nevada and ends on the American Labor Day holiday in September. Celebrated as an experiment in community, radical self-expression, radical self-reliance, radical inclusion and decommodification et al, the event sees a throng of masses coming together and creating radical art.

This sculpture made from old bikes stood at one of the entrances to the Centre Camp at the 2007 edition of the event and as radical as it is, symbolized (to me) the death of original expression and the sheer disrespect to the need of keeping recycling as a top propriety and being responsible to the environment over the need for creating some pretty pathetic art! I hope the organizers had the good sense to dismantle this thing and send it to a recycling centre after the event!
