iPhone: Eco friendly or Poisonous?

is that iphone really green

Just when we all thought that our Apple iPhones would help save the environment, Greenpeace has done what it does best. Make us all feel guilty of buying the most hyped product. According to a report by the international environment group Greenpeace, it claims that iPhone, Apple’s biggest product launch in June this year since CEO Steve Job’s statement, a Greener Apple, is brimming with brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and hazardous PVCs.

On analyzing the iPhone bought in US, it was found that the headphone cables contained ‘phthalate plasticisers’, banned from use in toys and childcare items sold in Europe. Nokia did it, so did Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Dell and Lenovo. They all removed some of the toxic chemicals from their products also offering free take back policy. Apple too had announced a similar and bigger role in being green. But Greenpeace with this report has a different song to sing. In a statement earlier this year, Steve Jobs had announced that Green will become Apple’s motto since with iPhone. With iPhone’s launch due in Europe this November, it is hard to say whether the iPhone model for sale in US will comply to the European ROHS (restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment) With the Greenpeace statement doing the rounds, the iPhone might just be a missed call for all the eco conscious.
