Pocono Raceway switches on its 3MW photovoltaic solar farm

nascar pocono raceway adds 3mw solar plant

Eco Factor: PV solar farm to generate 3MW power for NASCAR racetrack.

The Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania is aiming to become the world’s largest sports facility that is powered entirely by solar energy. Less than a year after the groundbreaking ceremony for a 25-acre solar array, the 3MW installation at the raceway has been switched on and tied to the grid.

Consisting 40,000 photovoltaic modules installed by enXco, the solar installation will provide renewable electricity to the racetrack and about 1000 nearby homes. NASCAR estimates that the solar array will be producing 72 million kilowatt hours of electricity during its lifetime of 20 years, which will help offset about 3100 metric tons of CO2 each year.
