Eco Factor: Sustainable office design includes large fan and skylight powered by solar energy.
Tilted facades enveloped in shimmering glass characterize modern office building just about everywhere. Treading a different path Olson Kundig Architects inject refreshing diversity into office building design with T Bailey Offices in Anacortes, Washington.
Their fascinating design revolves around creation of a sustainable design which blends with their adjoining heavy industrial manufacturing plant utilizing pipe shafts used in wind turbine towers. The mind bending design envisions vertical 22’ and horizontal 14’ diameter cut pipe shafts making for an entrance.
The vertical pipe has a solar powered skylight and a large fan to ventilate the office floor. Enough solar energy is harnessed by these to suck out warm air from the office building thereby reducing the cooling load. The roof’s slope directs runoff into a rain garden and adjoining landscape.
The uncoated all steel fabrication lends rusticity to the 11,700 square foot office building design adjoining the existing heavy industrial manufacturing plant of T Bailey without comprising on aesthetics.
