Eco Factor: Energy efficient OLED module powered directly from mains electricity supply.
Scientists from Philips Research have unveiled the world’s first organic light emitting diode (OLED) module that is powered directly from a mains electricity supply. The technology is designed to offer a completely new vision of solid-state lighting devices that help reduce the financial and environmental costs of lighting.
Next to LEDs that offer very high brightness in a compact shape, OLEDs emit light over an extended area. Moreover, OLEDs are fully dimmable and can produce many colors in addition to white, which makes them an extremely attractive option for general illumination. Until now, OLEDs need to be powered from low-voltage DC sources, but Philips’ prototype can be plugged directly into the wall socket.
