The Pacific Gas and Electric Company has signed an agreement with Solel to purchase 553MW of solar power from Mojave Solar Park that is being constructed in California’s Mojave’s Desert.

This agreement will mark the largest single commitment to buy solar power. PG&E hopes that this purchased power will be enough to power 400,000 homes. PG&E also announced that this deal is a milestone in realizing their goal to supply clean and green power to 20% of their customers.

The Mojave Solar Park is built on Solel’s patented and commercially-proven solar thermal parabolic trough technology. The same technology has been used over the past 20 years and is being used in nine solar power plants in the Mojave Desert and accounts for 354 MW of annual electricity output.

Mojave Solar Park will be one of the biggest solar farms in California when it will be completed in 2011. The project will require 6,000 acres or nine square miles in the Mojave Desert. It will also require 1.2 million mirrors and 317 miles of vacuum tubing to capture the sun’s energy.
