Peruvian farmer runs dairy farm on guinea pig power

guinea pig poop generates electricity in peru

Eco Factor: Farm uses guinea pig poop to produce combustible gas.

While for many of us solar and wind energy are the two most easily accessible forms of renewable energy, a Peruvian farmer is using the waste of his adorable animals to produce enough energy to power his dairy farm. The farmer collects about 400 pounds of guinea pig poop each month, which is then left for anaerobic digestion.

Once bacteria have feasted on the poop, a combustible gas is produced that can be used to generate electricity. The system doesn’t need fancy, expensive equipment, but can generate renewable electricity in a green fashion. The monthly collection allows the farmer to run his dairy farm, while generates a little extra gas as well.
