We are continuously researching new ways of reducing waste at all stages in the lifecycle of our products. Helsinki, Finland’s UPM-Kymmene has a similar habit. The latest offering from the forest products company recycles leftover paper and plastic into a wood composite it calls UPM ProFi. It is used in patios, playgrounds and jetties. It combines the best quality of wood fibers and plastic and is an excellent example of combining material technology and recycling. The principle raw material for this wood-plastic composite is paper and plastic, which is surplus from UPM’s label materials production.

ProFi planks are sturdy, lightweight, long-lasting, nontoxic and easy to install. No specific chemicals needed for surface treatment makes it all the handier. It can be disposed of by incineration, recycling back to the production cycle or putting it to the household or energy waste. This means that UPM ProFi Deck is truly environmentally friendly. They can be sawed, drilled, and sanded like wood. The material is water-resistant and has a nonskid surface even when wet.
