Ocean-floor and mobile sensors Network to Detect Tsunami faster, more accurately!

Now, tsunami will be sensed from under the ocean water! Imagine a network of ocean-floor and mobile sensors to help detect tsunamis in the Indian and Pacific oceans in a much quicker and accurate way compared to the buoys alone. Yes, researchers are hoping to develop just that!

The devices or the mobile sensors will cost low and would be complementing the existing deep-water tsunami-detection buoys. It will be providing measurements and analysis of seismic movements faster and more accurately than the buoys alone, according to Louise Comfort, a University of Pittsburgh professor working on the project.

These new sensors in large numbers — filling in large gaps between buoys — would offer greater coverage of the oceans. This will help scientists alert the officials on undersea earthquakes — trigger tsunamis and endanger coastal areas — promptly.
