Now military plans to go green with hybrid trucks

Here is HEMTT (Heavy Expanded Mobility Technical Truck) – a truck indeed. But, this version is not here just because it is about as loud as a standard sedan, and provided with a smooth ride, splashy computer screens and a comfortable interior! This is a hybrid made at the request of the Defense Department.

Oshkosh Truck Corp’s HEMTT is working to finish up prototypes of its electric hybrid. From the standard 3 to 4 miles per gallon, it increases gas mileage by about 20%. The electricity it generates can power a city block or a hospital!

But, how would the hybrid technology affect prices for the military vehicles? It is not yet clear as the diesel version costs from $200,000 to $400,000.

But, according to Schmiedel, vice president of advanced product engineering for Oshkosh Truck, ‘Even modest reductions in gas mileage help, he said, pointing out that 70 percent of what military vehicles carry is fuel.’
