Scientists have developed a new flood-tolerant rice variety that can also be a potential weapon to fight against both crop-ravaging weeds and water pollution.

Ready to make its way from the lab to the field, it will be a great gift and relief to the California rice farmers! The research is made in collaboration between UC Davis, UC Riverside and the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines.

Unlike the natural rice plants that typically die if completely submerged for more than a few days, the new rice variety can survive underwater for up to two weeks!
