Fuel cells to power a train! Amid the rising chase for hybrid auto-making across the world Japan’s biggest rail company does not seem to stay away from the changing trend. To roll out cleaner and more efficient transportation, East Japan Railways Co. will soon be testing fuel cells to power a train.

These fuel cells will generate electricity, which is pollution-free. Its engine will produce only water vapor as exhaust, and no thick steam or toxic gas! Initially consisting of a single car powered by electric batteries, then train will be capable of traveling at up to 62 miles per hour. Most of the electricity will be provided by a diesel-run generator.

The company will start test runs of the New Energy Train this July, and it aims to operate on regular tracks by the middle of next year.
