Mitsubishi Electric and Mitsubishi Motors unveil solar powered EV charging station

MitsubishiA collaborative effort from the two ‘wings’ of the Mitsubishi Group, that is the Mitsubishi Electric and the Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA), has resulted in the first solar-powered charging station in Cypress, California. Built adjacent to the MMNA headquarters, this state-of-the-art charging station incorporates a whopping 96 high efficiency, lead-free photovoltaic modules (each of 175W capacity) from Mitsubishi Electric.

The facility will feature conventional charging mechanism, along with catering to CHAdeMO (a quick charging technology for battery electric vehicles) compatible vehicles, just like the about to be launched Mitsubishi i. With a capacity to charge four vehicles at a time, the station will feature two normal charging outlets with different levels of voltages.

Upon testing, it was found out that a 110 V charger could provide a full 100 percent charge to Mitsubishi i in 22 hours, while a 220 V charger could charge the vehicle in 6 hours. But the defining element of this charging station is the third kind of CHAdeMO Quick Charger, which can fleetingly charge the vehicle to 80 percent battery capacity, in just under 25 minutes. This makes the whole sustainable set up apt for the commercial service of the Mitsubishi i cars, over the Los Angeles and Orange county route.
