The Solar Decathlon is a competition held by the US Department of Energy and organized by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). This is one of the most ambitious and inspiring international competitions that challenges 20 collegiate teams to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, energy-efficient solar powered houses that incorporate energy-saving appliances and renewable energy systems. The Solar Decathlon was initially held in 2002 and since then it has been held every two years. This time it is scheduled to take place at the National Mall’s West Potomac Park in the fall of 2011.

One of the participant teams from Middlebury College is building a house called Self Reliance. This house combines the best aspects of a traditional New England farmhouse and the efficient technologies of today. This traditional-looking house has both a photovoltaic (PV)array and hot water panels for electricity and hot water for the house.

Durable and safe natural materials have been used for the construction of the house. It is a small family home that makes optimal use of space and light. The house gets enough natural daylight and heating. The house will have a greenhouse on the southern side garden area just outside the windows, providing fresh produce for family meals. The house is budgeted at $250,000 making it affordable for a family of four.

Self-Reliance is designed to respond to Vermont’s cold climate which requires tough homes with efficient solar capabilities. Small windows with minimal glazing prevent heat loss. The house is insulated with 11 inch-thick walls to fight the cold winters.
