Creating solar powered cars is not new, but the students of Michigan have taken a quantum leap in this field. The Quantum, the first of its kind car created by Michigan University team, weighs just 320 pounds. One hardly wonders why the world is sitting up and taking notice. The Quantum is designed for the World Solar Challenge that is to be held in Australia later this year. The team is hopeful of creating a record of sorts by winning the event. The last time an American car won was way back in 1987.

The aerodynamic design took a while to be finalized with some timely help from the Exa corporation. “They have the software that’s incredibly powerful, and we couldn’t have that kind of precision with any software that we had available,” said Ms. Kramer, who manages the team’s budget.

Over 300 companies have joined in sponsoring the team, which includes General Motors. Chris Hilger, a senior chemical engineering major from Northville, Michigan, who also works as the business and operations director, says…

Quantum is one of the most aerodynamic vehicles anywhere.

The 20 member team that will travel to Australia will include a meteorologist. Weather forecasts are vital to help the team optimize power during sustained period of cloud cover and dust storms. Solar panels help produce the electricity to power the car which are stored in lithium ion batteries.

The Quantum looks all set to its final leap but it will face tough competition from defending champions from the Tokai University of Japan and a host other nations vying for the top honor. But, the first test however will come at the Formula Sun Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in May. Here’s wishing the MU team a speedy finish!
