Eco Factor: Sustainable development harnesses renewable energy.

Michael Graves & Associates (MGA) has recently completed the first of the two phases of Singapore’s first large-scale multi-recreational luxury park, the Resorts World Sentosa. The resort includes a Universal Singapore Theme Park, six hotels, a casino, museum, marine life park, a 7300-person underground ballroom and several restaurants.

To be developed on a 121-acre site, the project aims to attract both gamblers and families. The project includes a 470-room boutique hotel, which has been designed by Graves inside and outside. Featuring furniture and furnishings from the Michael Graves Design Group, Hotel Michael will also include paintings in public spaces and in each guest room.

The resort also includes an orchid-themed Festive Hotel that has been aimed at families, and the ultra-luxury Crocksford Tower will include a casino. A Hard Rock Hotel, convention center and coliseum theater are part the project, and the exterior was designed by Graves with the interiors done by the Hard Rock’s own design group.

The architects are planning to start the second phase of the project in July on the west zone of the site and embrace the quieter tropical environment with the Equarius Hotel and two tree-house suites, elevated on stilts with wood construction inside.

The sustainable development will include several energy-saving systems, and renewable energy will be generated by a solar panel array, which can provide up to 500,000KWh annually. Rainwater will be harvested and reused, which allows the project to gain a GoldPlus award from Singapore’s Building and Construction agency.
