Well, it’s not quite the Transformers, but student designer Liviu Tudoran has fascinatingly envisaged of something similar as an intrinsic part of his car concept. Christened as the Maserati Fractal, the design of this ultra-futuristic automobile will be governed by the advanced fractal shape theory. The Fractal in itself can be described as any irregular geometric shape, which can be divided into smaller components that exhibits similar (or at least approximately equal) spatial qualities. In this case, the design would fuse the different organic shapes to coalesce into a compatible and balanced end product of a stylish car.
Supposedly inspired by the eclectic essence of New York City, the idea behind this avant-garde concept according to the designer’s own words is – “to create a future generation of vehicle that will break the general idea of conventional vehicles”. So to be appealing to the next ‘hip’ generation, the car body in itself will comprise of a composite of different sturdy materials. The main frame will be composed of lightweight aluminium, while the doors will be constructed from fiber glass. But the interesting feature of this modernistic vehicle will be its rear section, which will be built from a piezoelectric polymer material.
This advanced piezoelectric polymer material will allow the vehicle to literally shift its shape accordingly for a commuting convenience. For example a part of this rear section can ‘open up’ as a trunk space (with responsive structural thin components), as the driver wishes. The section can also alter its height for passenger convenience as well as enhancing upon the aerodynamics of the vehicular form. Coming to the interior, this same piezoelectric element can be used to power the exclusive interior steering mechanism, which will be incorporated with touch screen controls and automatic console components.
Now coming to the sustainable part, the car will feature an in-wheel electric motor connected to a sturdy gas engine. So, even if the ‘transforming’ part may sound a little far fetched, we are all up for a low emission romp around the city blocks, in a radical, state-of-the-art yet green technology oriented vehicle of future.
