Jonathan Callan’s Makeover for old books

books
How many old books have you simply thrown away because you didn’t need them any more or they were taking up too much space? More than you can count, I can bet. Who could have guessed that old books can make such beautiful walls of art?

Kudos to Jonathan Callan for creating such exquisite pieces of art from vintage or used books. The wall of art in the picture above is actually an installation of coverless books that are drilled together to create an intrinsically organic structure that at first glance, tricks the viewer into thinking it to be the cross-section of a fallen tree.

In order to point out what all can be done with everyday trivial objects, he has cut, scratched, folded and punched surfaces of original prints, paintings and photographs rendering the original virtually unrecognizable, giving them a complete makeover.

Jonathan snubs the idea that books are sacred cultural artifacts. Jonathan prefers to treat books as objects and points out about their diminishing importance in the Internet age. Not getting into controversies, let’s just say that his work attempts to encourage viewers to consider how we now address traditional modes of relaying knowledge such as through the use of textbooks, encyclopedias and atlases. In his artist statement, Callan describes his work as addressing, “the relationship of disembodied knowledge to embodied experience and materiality.”
