When the world geared up to save the environment, the bulbs became one of the targets where change was felt necessary to be brought about. The outcome was energy-saving light bulbs which use only a quarter of energy used by old-style bulbs, although they are often five times the cost of old-fashioned bulbs. So satisfied was the world with these fluorescent bulbs that they were due to become compulsory in households in the next four years, being considered a big step in saving energy.
Unfortunately, these bulbs appear to be doing more than saving energy. To the despair of health experts and charities, especially The Migraine Action Association, they are causing migraines coupled with dizziness, loss of focus and discomfort among people with epilepsy! Worse, they have allegedly been the cause behind lupus, an auto-immune disease causing many symptoms including pain. The complaints also stretch to the quality of these bulbs, which have been reported to be cold or green, flickering or requiring time to warm properly. The Lighting Association, however, denies the allegations against the quality of these bulbs.
The Government is now in a fix as to what to do about the issue. Campaigners appeal to allow people susceptible to health problems to continue using regular bulbs.
A spokesman for the Energy Saving Trust said:
“The technology has changed massively over the last few years. We would advise people to only buy bulbs with the Energy Saving Recommended – SR – logo.”
