Living in a concrete jungle, in apartments that barely meet our basic needs, most of us struggle for a whiff of pure air. Rising number of vehicles and factories have aggravated the problem of air pollution. Not most of us can afford air filtration systems at home.
Nature has bestowed upon us lovely plants that not only enhance the beauty of our homes, but also give us healthy air to breathe! You will be relieved to know, that some plants not only take in carbon dioxide, but even the toxins and pollutants and act as natural water or air filters.
Dragon tree (Dracaena) is one of the most efficient pollutant destroyers. You must have often seen a plant with long spiky variegated leaves on a tall stem in the centre .These plants are often seen in offices, and can reach upto 8ft in normal conditions.
Then comes the goosefoot plant (Syngonium podophyllum), which has marbled leaves and is effective against all forms of air pollution. It needs a temperature of 15C, ample light and loam soil.
If you work in an office where most of your time goes on the computer, then spider plant is a must for you. It is effective against formaldehyde and the emissions from computer terminals.
Apart from the ones mentioned above, there are loads of other plants that act as air purifiers. Ivy, ferns, rubber plant, peace lily, Chrysanthemums, gerberas, African violets, cyclamen and kalanchoes are some that can suck the pollutants out of your office or home.
