Korean adventurers successfully complete the world’s first zero emission expedition to Antarctica

first co2 free expedition to antarctica

The fascinating endeavor was brought to our attention by one Seoul Broadcasting System aired documentary. Raising awareness about the potential risks of global warming and some innovative solutions in answer to such instigations, the show chronicled the development and successful completion of journey of one eco-mobile (one reaching the South Pole), designed and engineered by SBS’s production team and a technical expert.

Already touted as the world’s first solar powered snow mobile used in an Antarctic expedition, this adamantly green machine was powered by a plethora of efficient yet renewable elements that includes twelve 210W solar modules, four wind turbines, a 5kW electric motor and a 48v/100AH LiFePO4 battery.

Coming to the performance, each of these vehicles were actually incorporated with 3 battery packs, each with a range of 20 miles. That logically allowed the eco mobile to traverse 60 miles each day (though during the last stages 30 miles were measured due to bad weather conditions). The power generated was around 2kWh, while the vehicle could maintain a constant speed of 20 kmph.

Now harking back to the momentous journey itself, it was started on 19th of December, 2010 from the Union Glacier Base Camp, and the wholly zero emission enterprise was successfully completed on 28th of January, 2011 after crossing 1,200km of Antarctica’s ice draped sinister landscape.
