It seems like US stores want to make most of environ–conscious air that is blowing around.

After Publix having ventured into Greenwise in a mammoth way, Kohl is next departmental chain who has more than just products to offer.

It activated its first rooftop solar energy system at Laguna Niguel, Calif., on Thursday and plans to convert 63 of its total 80 California stores to solar energy. Solar energy will be responsible for 40% of each store’s electricity consumption. In the very first year more cutting down on more than 28 million pounds of CO2 emissions is aimed at.

If Kohl is able to keep up to plans it will be able to generate 25 megawatts of solar energy that will equal to 15% share of the total solar energy representation by California and largest in the history of US.

Under an agreement between Kohl’s and SunEdison, Kohl’s would pay nothing for the installation for the next twenty years and will buy energy at a fixed rate from the company.

Scheduled to be completed in 2008, with the use of more than 138,000 solar panels, Kohl’s will be able to generate 35 million kilowatt –hours of energy annually.
