The historic Fredericia municipality, a garrison and harbor town named after the Danish monarch Frederick III, is all set to get a sustainable revamp, at least if we go by the plans of KCAP Architects & Planners, together with advisors Ramboll and Fakton. Because they won the open competition for developing a definitive urban spatial element (of 21 hectares), as an intrinsic part of the parent city. Dubbed as the FredericiaC, this planned carbon neutral section will expand the existing inner city by 25 percent and accommodate a mixed zone space of 260,000 sq m.

The open competition was organized by the Local Authority of Fredericia and Realdania By, and the unique feature of this system was that the jury gave adequate consideration to the opinions of the stakeholders, experts and even the local citizens. The result was a clean and fluid procedure that allowed the final selection of eco architecture oriented KCAP Architects.

Now coming to the development, the design decisions will look forth to maintain that historical ambiance along with modern facilities. For example the renaissance grid system of the historic township will be continued in this section, albeit with more expansive views. Another interesting design consideration will be the creation of a unique park surrounding the section, which would make the splendid vaults around the city to be accessible from a common, recreational area. Finally the existing seafront will be bedecked by a myriad of canals, thus accentuating the level of connection (both visually and spatially) of the city to the sea.

The competition jury said:

Team KCAP’s coherent and well-prepared physical and structural concept, springing from historical considerations about Fredericia’s urban structure, has created special qualities in the form of a canal structure and a pronounced urbanism as the key means for a robust development strategy for FredericiaC. The proposal is distinct with its urbanism and its very strong concept of bringing great attractiveness and value to all lots.
