Here is one of the best news an environmentalist could have heard in a long, long time. I for one know what news is usually up on the environment channels of the world. It either is about how soon the world would end because of global warming or about where the next major calamity would hit & how it is a direct or indirect derivative of the former. But here is news that should be music to all those sore ears. Isle of Wight (which is a beautiful little island, with tranquil climate & a far better weather than mainland England) plans to become a ‘Green Island’ in the near future. The Island is all set to be the first to be called a complete eco-island.
Isle of Wight is already contemplating of completely converting itself in to a place that runs only on green, alternate fuel. This means that the entire island wishes to derive its energy from clean sources & wishes to eliminate the complete usage of fossil fuel as an energy provider. The first step in this direction is to achieve as low carbon emission as possible. The island wishes to derive its energy from wind, tidal & gasified waste. This would be the first such initiative in UK.
Bembridge Windmill on the Isle:
Joe Duckworth, the CEO of the council for the island said that the people & the administration were very keen on the entire project. He also says that the island is ideally placed to achieve its goal (I guess that means a bit away from Gordon Brown & his ideas of nuclear technology as alternate source). He also says that the local private sector is very keen to help out the Council on this noble step forward.
The island has also taken many other steps such as construction of buildings with high eco-standards & zero-emission carbon schools to make sure that they are laying down the right path. They also claim that within the next few years the island will have just one carriageway roads & a parallel one for pedestrians & cyclists!
The council is taking the help of both environmentalists & scholars for this dream to turn into a reality. Just hope that they get all the infrastructural & economic backing. Isle of Wight is a gorgeous island which I have seen long back on TV as one of the top 10 places for a honeymoon. Now that honeymoon might have just gotten a lot greener & sweeter!
