Iraq gets water purification system using NASA technology

nasas solution to water crisis in iraq

To improve the lives of the Iraqi villagers, NASA engineers helped install and test a water purification system in the northern village of Kendala. This is done at the agency’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.

With the failure of a pump for the village’s deep-water well two years ago, the residents here were left without access to clean water leading the population dwindle from more than 1,000 residents to just 150 rapidly.

The habitants who stayed back were forced to haul water from nearby creeks that were muddied by livestock. To escape from the suspended pollutants like dirt and debris, they strained the water through fabric.

The Environmental Control and Life Support System, designed to recycle air and water on the International Space Station can dramatically reduce the necessity for frequent, costly resupply missions from Earth.

The ‘Concern For Kids’ filtration and purification system was designed for the villages, which uses the same technology developed for NASA and used on the space shuttle.
It is manufactured by Water Security Corporation — a commercial company in Reno, Nev.
