Integrated Research & Development Center: Multi-level garden & multi-faceted design

research center 1

Taking shape in Korea is the Integrated Research & Development Center and it well and truly integrates design with green features. While it is not the typical ‘concept design’ that tries and stuff every possible green feature, it is a practical model which tries all it can do to go cool. Designed keeping its surroundings in mind, the structure ensures that it does not intrude with the natural flora and fauna around it.

Nestled next to a highway, the Integrated Research & Development Center sports a common central-area, a research facility, a cafeteria and many other features that support those working in the facility. The lower floor of the building features a very special multi-level garden and allows you to get some fresh air along with offering the building a semblance of natural insulation by maintaining temperature inside.

There is also a vent that sweeps from the top to bottom of the entire building providing it with ample natural lighting and hence saving on the energy that would be otherwise spent to light up the research center. While both the green features bring a bit of ‘eco-architecture’ to this latest research facility in Korea, we would love to see a few more cool additions.

Just one look at its giant roof and you are left wondering why there is no solar rooftop installation and why such vast space is wasted. Put some photovoltaic panels on top and the Integrated Research & Development Center would be another wonderful addition to the wide array of commercial green buildings in South-East Asia.
