Eco Factor: Innovative landmarks to produce renewable energy for state park.
Designed by Hunter Ruthrauff and Garrett Van Leeuwen, the Info Nodes are sustainable landmarks that have been designed to better the eco-credentials of San Onofre State Park, home to Trestles surf break. The designers have proposed the development of landmarks along the walkway, which can lead visitors from one point on the path to the next.
The landmarks or micro-destinations called “Info Nodes” educate the visitors about the site and its history. Moreover, the nodes will also serve as an example of sustainable technology. The inner nodes are solar energy collectors, the entrance node is a public shower station that collects water to re-use onsite and processes gray water.
The nodes over the wetlands will harvest algae to produce bio-fuel using a coiled bioreactor that also filters water for the wetlands’ ecosystem. The design is meant to minimize the intrusiveness of human development on the ecosystem, while also trying to create an innovative and exciting experience.
