Computer giant HP reached the half-billion recycling mark in 2004; it was then that the company announced that they will be able to reach the 1 billion mark before the end of 2007.

The company has achieved its green target a good six months before the deadline. They now plan to recycle another billion by the end of 2010, HP would have to double its annual recovery rate if they have achieve this target.

HP’s Chairman Mark Hurd stated that electronics companies should be environmentally responsible and think it as a good business. He also stated:

We’ve reached the tipping point and performance of IT are no longer compromised by being green, but are not enhanced by it.

The company also stated that to achieve this landmark the company reduced the amount of electronics going into landfills and also helped its customers to dispose of products in a better way. The metal and plastic they got by recycling the products have been converted into products such as auto parts, plastic clothing, hangers, toys and other materials.

HP’s recycling program operates in 40 countries, regions and territories. This is another step taken by electronics giants to protect the Earth from disaster… If more and more companies think HP’s way then surely our Earth will become a better place to live in.
