Technological developments were once sophistication and commercialization. Today, its become more of an essential requirement and the needs are increasing with time. We want everything at our door-step, the moment we want it and we want the best.
There is no technology without energy requirement. Faster, you want your technology to work, more the energy it would consume. But gone are those days. Today, manufacturers are being conscious about energy consumption of every new technology and its effects. Technology is at the peak of revolution now, to meet the needs of every individual with no compromise.
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (GST) has introduced the desktop hard drive, Deskstar™ P7K500. Hitachi claims it is the worlds most energy efficient desktop hard drive. But that needs to be confirmed only after a rigorous research along with other hard drives.
This development of Hitach is said to reduce power consumption by 40% in comparison with the previous generation of hard drives. Deskstar™ P7K500 hard drive is designed for commercial and consumer PCs in capacities ranging from 250GB to 500GB. However, it is 59 percent more power efficient than other 250GB hard drives in its class. There are two models designed – the one-disk model and the two-disk model, both with 7200 RPM performance and Serial-ATA interface.
Hitachi’s new desktop hard drive utilizes only 3.6 watts on the 250GB capacity model and 4.8 watts on models with capacities of 320GB or greater in an idle mode and in the active mode, 6.4 watts and 8.2 watts for its one- and two-disk models, respectively. By utilizing roughly half the 7 watts of idle power typically allocated for hard drives, Hitachi GST enables ENERGY STAR PCs to allot more power margin thus reducing the overall power requirements.
“The development of ‘green’ computing products that comply with energy-rating programs, such as ENERGY STAR 4.0, is becoming an extremely important initiative for our customers,” said Shinjiro Iwata, executive vice president, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. “With the Deskstar P7K500 hard drive, we have merged our various power management innovations into one drive, achieving leading power specifications that make a positive contribution to system power consumption”, he added.
Hitachi has incorporated the perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) heads and disks, enabling 250GB-per-platter aerial density giving it the reliability. The cost of thisn new hard drive is not disclosed but be sure to save a good amount.
