The world is moving at a fast pace forward revamping and re-designing itself in a bid to maximize its resources and to sustain the growing community needs. In this fast paced frenzy, we are starting to ignore the needs of the planet; needs which in all reality must be placed on par with out own, if not above. The planet is ailing from various problems and most of these have been created by us. It is no wonder then that if we continue merrily on our own way and continue trashing the planet, it will all reach a point of no return very soon.
GreenU is a community structure with the motto of reduce, reuse and recycle for the entire community. GreenU’s function is to serve as a very visible and very recognizable place to abandon your trash and deposit your recyclables. In a world dominated by garbage cans at the expense of recycling bins, disposing trash without proper cars is dangerous and deemed frivolous. GreenU solves this problem by the construction of a very visible community structure which will help solve the problem of everyone without a fight for disposal space.
Due to GreenU’s relatively basic composition, cast-in-place concrete and laminated bamboo, its role can be carried out in unison with the environment- not at its expense. GreenU’s function is accentuated through the affordances lent by its form. Not only is the structure a refuge for sustainability, but it also serves as a centralized shelter, posting area, and meeting place on campus. Designed by Andrew Volpe and Edd Theut it is a structure that provides both shelter when needed and helps the planet heal in a green way. The simplicity and the utility of the structure make it great indeed and a must have for many communities at disarray!
