The term “eco-friendly speed-freak” is no longer an oxymoron. A team of British designers and engineers are attempting to break the wind driven land speed record using their creation, The Greenbird. The record attempt will take place on a dry lake bed in Australia, perfect ground for breaking land speed records. The Greenbird catches the wind using a sail similar to an aircraft wing, which allows it to reach 3–5 times the actual wind speed. And on a flat-out surface that can be a lot!
The record stands at 116.7 MPH, an impressive figure considering absolutely no fuel was burned during the process! The team hopes that this will encourage the use of wind powered vehicles for more practical uses in everyday life. If all goes well they may even design one to the same end! What next for these green speed nuts? They plan to fit ice skates to their invention and attempt to break the ice vehicle record. Well, here’s wishing them the best of luck!
