Green Living in City Center Lofts

green living in city center

Living in a green world can start from living in the greenest residential projects in the State of Utah. Constructed from fully 50% recycled material by weight, City Center Lofts is slated to be erected next year on the site of the 337 Project, the grass-roots public art venture on 400 East in Salt Lake City. Taking a whole-building approach to sustainability, design of the City Center Lofts will consider sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.

Designed by Adam Kalkin, container architecture expert, the green, ultra-modern condo building will have eight units and a ground level art gallery. Orange shipping containers will be stacked on alternating stories with steel-and-glass frames in between. A standard unit will be three containers wide about 24 feet with finished walls, concrete floors, energy-efficient windows and radiant heat. It will include features such as a green roof, on-demand hot water heaters, abundant natural light and ventilation, high performance windows, radiant heat, low VOC paints and finishes, and high efficiency air to air heat exchange and HEPA filtration. And if you are wondering that why shipping containers, then read on to know more…

I just came across this fact that because the United States imports more goods than it exports, and because it’s cheaper to manufacture new cargo containers overseas than send them back empty, millions of the surplus containers sit rusting in American shipyards. They are sold at scrap-steel prices about $1,000-$3,000 apiece. So most of the architects feel they are affordable and environmentally friendly as construction materials. Designed to be stacked up to nine high on freighters without toppling in heavy seas, the containers fit together like enormous Lego bricks, which makes construction quick. Their rugged steel walls also make them durable, termite-proof and fire-resistant. Also they’re practically bomb-proof.

Developed by Adam and Dessi Price of Almost 4th & 4th, LLC, City Center Lofts will add a green tinge to Utah’s sustainable future. Prices for the units haven’t been set.
