Google’s green venture – Churning energy cheaper than coal

google

Google is getting greener, and trying to help others expand their use of solar and wind power. The Internet search giant is pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into alternative energy sources in an effort to relieve the environmental strain from its massive computing centers. The aim is to reduce the cost of producing electricity from renewable energy sources.

Google, now the sixth-largest U.S. Company by market value, is taking advantage of its size, a growing mountain of cash, and global brand recognition in launching the campaign. The push comes as oil prices near $100 a barrel and coal, which generates 40 percent of the world’s electricity, faces regulatory and environmental pressures that may boost prices.

The company’s co-founder says Google could make a lot of money from the venture and reduce the cost of solar power by 25 to 50 percent. This initiative will create jobs, though how many is unclear. It’s the latest sign that renewable energy technology development can be a growing source of economic power in the coming years.
