Google joins fight against global warming, to go carbon-neutral this year

google inc goes green 9Ready to do its bit in the ongoing war against global warming, web search giant Google Inc has set itself the target of going carbon-neutral by the end of the current year.

To compensate for the greenhouse gas it emits, Google has decided to spend considerable amount of money towards renewable energy, besides buying carbon offsets for emissions its can’t curb.

The company said on its website

On their own, carbon offsets are not capable of creating the kinds of fundamental changes to our energy infrastructure that will be necessary to stabilize global greenhouse gas emissions to safe levels.

But we believe that offsets can offer real, measurable, and additional emissions reductions that allow us to take full responsibility for our footprint today.

It seems a welcome trend and Google is not the only company which has woke up to greenhouse reality. Companies like News Corp., and Yahoo Inc. are also planning to go green.

Though United States is not party to the Kyoto Protocol, some of the American companies are still investing in carbon offsets through the United Nations program, which has the provision of rich European countries investing in clean-green projects in the developing nations.

The Climate Group, a non-profit emission advisor, would assist Google in its green plans.
