Golden Mean: Recycling amalgamated with art and math!

If you wanted to recycle an old car into something useful then probably the best thing to do would be to come up a re-done version that uses some modern car kit to patch up the old scrap and get it going again. If you love what lies under the hood then you might just squeeze in a V8 engine and then roar around the streets. But making a giant snail out of a 1966 Volkswagen—that is not something you would do unless you are blacksmith John Sarriugarte.

Sarriugarte, who fabricates custom home furnishings, worked with his wife, Kyrsten Mate, to transform a 1966 VW Bug into this rolling piece of art. The giant snail is named The Golden Mean, and is all set to make its debut at the Burning Man art festival this year. So why would someone name their pet project-snail the “Golden Mean”? Apparently this six-seater takes its name from the golden ratio; a mathematical proportion that’s said to produce aesthetically pleasing art and architecture.

This is probably one of the best examples you will ever find of recycling in a giant way with cars and vehicles, and while the snail looks huge, it can move much faster than a normal snail. Inspired by Kyrsten’s dream, it took the best efforts of a skilled man to turn the junk into a moving work of art. Hopefully others will take a cue from the giant snail and recycling will gain pace.
