The worth of organic foods has always been questioned where arguments from both sides are worth considering. If we go by the stats and apply some science we will get to know that organic food is good for adults and best for kids.
Stats have shown that in the United States, 1.2 billion pounds of ‘active’ ingredients in pesticides were sprayed last year. These active ingredients are known to be neurotoxins, hormone disrupters and probably carcinogens. Similarly millions of pounds of inert ingredients are also sprayed annually, these too like their big brothers are no good for human as well as animal life.
Researchers tested the productivity of both organic and inorganic farms and found out that organic farms performed equally well as their competitor. That means there is no need for harmful pesticides. Mostly all the pesticides are used to make the farm products look pretty so that they can fetch more money from the market. But as there is an old saying that goes like – ‘All that glitters is not gold’, these pesticide enriched products do no good to the human health.
Kids are the most vulnerable when it comes to the evaluation of harmful pesticide residues in their bodies. They have more hand-to-mouth contact than elders. The immune system of the kids is also less developed than that in adults. This leaves them even more prone to diseases that are a result of these pesticides accumulating in kids. Another concern is that children eat more specific fruits and vegetables, so their exposure to a particular pesticide can mount quickly and be particularly high.
Researchers have also found out that turning to organic diet can quickly leave a measurable impact on the health of kids. Researchers also found that those with organic diets had lower levels of organophosphate residues than the kids who were busy munching non-organic foods. Other researches has also shown that organic diet is the simplest and the best way that parents can adopt to reduce their kid’s exposure to pesticides.
