Giant ‘Willow’ grass to play a major role in UK’s energy supply

At last, Britain is banking on nature for tackling the effects of global warming. For heating and electricity, the country is turning to the giant grass corp – willow.

Some experts muted this plan to use crops for generating electricity. This perhaps is the best way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which is responsible for global warming. Miscanthus (elephant grass), and short rotation coppice willow, are already being used to fuel power stations, heat schools, hospitals and factories.

It is late April, the British government announced measures to promote biomass. This measure is believed to expand the proportion renewable resources energy needed by Britain. Thus biomass, which otherwise generally treated as waste, is now generating about 1 percent of Britain’s electricity, providing a similar proportion of heat generation.
