Germanium with ‘Pores’! Used to make more efficient solar cells

by tolbert and colleagues

Two independent groups of researchers in the US have developed techniques to make porous germanium. It is another semiconductor used widely in microelectronics. This new material can be used in making solar cells and chemical sensors that are more efficient than the existing ones.

A team of scientists at Los Angeles’ University of California and another team at the Michigan State University have used a technique to make germanium that contains well-ordered pores for the first time. The technique is dubbed as ‘surfactant templating’.
