General Motors unveils all-electric Chevy Beat in India

Chevrolet BEVWith the green brigade attempting to save our environment, sky high fuel prices have led to a growing interest in electric cars over the decades. Many top class models are already available on the world market; however, India lags behind the race. Mahindra Reva was the first electric car brand available to the Indian market. Now, another player has entered the arena. The brand new Chevrolet Beat Electrical Vehicle, also called the BEV, introduced by none other than General Motors.

Chevrolet BEVA demo vehicle of the BEV was showcased on June 23 by General Motors as part of the World Environment Day celebrations in New Delhi. This sassy car was a much awaited one, especially by environmentalists. The environmentally friendly car is powered by a 300 cell lithium-ion battery with an energy capacity of approximately 20KWh which can be charged in less than eight hours. It can travel for about 130 kilometers under normal conditions. A single speed drive unit and an electric motor, producing about 45KW of power, transfer power from the battery to the wheels.

General Motors presented the demo vehicle to demonstrate the efficient and smooth running of the BEV. Karl Slym, President & Managing Director of General Motors, India, assured that BEV engineers would strive to make the car as cost effective and affordable as possible for the Indian market. Mr. Slym also said that General Motors is committed to providing its global consumers with the best in electrification technologies, thereby helping them to save money on alternative fuel.

Electric cars seem to be a definite part of the Indian market in times to come. However the question remains – will Indian consumers welcome them with open arms or will the present market stagnation continue for some time?
