There’s a new movement amongst eco-willing developers called the “Sustainable Design”, which is creating resource efficient models of building construction, along with healthier living environments by combining the latest energy saving technologies in sort of a “hybrid” home. Pouwel Gelderloos takes his 30 years of building experience to the next level by designing a home that is capable of being completely self-sustaining, all this without compromising on style or any of the modern conveniences. The 3,000 square foot structure is octagon shaped with wings and is powered by a passive solar system and a wind generator.

The solar panels and a wind machine generate up to 7 kilowatts of electricity, which is stored in a bank of batteries in the basement. An atrium that’s wrapped around the front of the house helps store the heat in the brick and concrete floors and the two large doors which open into the atrium from the living room let warm air flow into the living areas or they keep the house cool on hot days. The atrium also doubles as a greenhouse, allowing growth of plants and vegetables all year. Recycled water irrigates the plants and is filtered before being used to flush toilets.

Gelderloos has also formed a new company, Oasis Hybrid Homes, which offers floor plans and consultation to others who wish to consider this option. As more builders across the entire nation build fuel efficient homes, the energy savings become tremendous. For example, for every 2,200 new energy efficient homes built by a willing developer, roughly 10 million pounds of greenhouse gases are prevented from entering into the atmosphere. Home buyers are also saving money over the long run in lower energy costs and potentially higher home resale value and gaining a healthier more comfortable living environment. Thus creating a home in harmony with its environment without sacrificing the comforts of a modern lifestyle.
