Garbage To Help Cook And Clean Up Slums

gbg

Christian Science Monitor has launched a pilot project in the slums of kibera in Nairobi. If successful, this project will with the aid of an oven, burn the waste from the city and produce power, in a bid to bring down massive deforestation in this area for charcoal and firewood etc.

“We have already seen a difference in the area we are targeting. The drainage ditches are much cleaner – just wastewater when before they were clogged with rubbish” said Pauline Nyota, of the Umande Trust, a group that works in slums to improve sanitation and leads the project.

This economical oven is made of a superheated steel plate inside an incinerator box. This vaporizes the drops of water. The oxygen that is released helps in burning the discarded “sump” oil from vehicles! Slump oil is a pollutant in the slums. This helps in pushing up the temperature. The cooker is to finish half of a ton dump in a day. The UNEP which provided $10,000 said this was a first of its kind project!
