Fujitsu Solar Lantern

Whether it is automobiles, gaming, robotics or any piece of technology you can think of, Japanese have always surprised you with their highly advanced technology. To raise the bar further, they have come up with a device which is not just ‘green’ but is also a potent disaster management utility. Fujitsu BSC has invented a solar lantern that also plays FM radio. The device holds special importance in the aftermath of March 11 earthquake and tsunami in which thousands of people lost their lives. The design of this solar panel is done keeping a post disaster, power cut scenario in mind.

The solar lantern is compact and light to carry, weighing only 2 pounds. The A-1 solar lantern can be charged in two ways. One way is through the large solar panel that covers its outer surface. The other method of charging this lantern is via a USB or an AC adapter. The 6 inch cube comes fitted with 32 LED lights on all four sides. The solar lantern can provide the maximum brightness of 60,000 millicandela.

The battery is designed to give maximum power backup. A fully charged battery can run up to 44 hours, providing light via all three sides. The FM radio is placed at the bottom of the device which only supports the frequency in the range of 76-90 MHz. Toshiba OLED lamp was the first one of its kind in this field. Now with the presence of Fujitsu in solar lamp market, people can expect to see some more innovations in the future. To begin with, the company has proposed to sell some 100,000 units as opposed to only 100 by Toshiba. Meanwhile, Fujitsu’s A-1 solar lantern is on sale from this week for $134.
