Eco Factor: Thermal spa wrapped with a living wall.

Geothermally heated groundwater, which oozes out of the Earth’s crust in Royat, France, lends a unique curative significance to the entire place. Rheumatic patients keep coming here for the much-needed succor. Just recently, Vincent Callebaut Architectures collaborated with Frederic Magnien Architect to design a thermal spa with an encircling living wall and an enveloping green roof over a site that locates itself on rivers Tiretaine and Liaboux.

The thermal spa, dubbed as Green Wave or Thermes de Royat, features several rooms, which contain changing rooms and two circular pools — one for resting and relaxing, while the other is specifically designed for aerobic activities led by a therapist. Much for the relief of cardio-arterial and rheumatologic patients, the pools are draped in aquatic plants with well-defined contours; and yes, there are colorful beaches too.

As the patients relax in the thermal water of the stainless steel pools, the effect is engorged through green wave’s roof that also features two skylights.
