Here is a good news for governments of coastal countries and tsunami-prone regions – especially those who are seeking inexpensive technology to warn of tsunamis. Michael Stadler has developed a free software application that monitors vibrations in the computers’ hard disks for detecting the undersea earthquake-causing tsunamis.
Called the Tsunami Harddisk Detector, the prototype system measures vibrations to keep the read-write head of the disk on track and these measurements can be read from some hard disks.
The Detector captures the vibration data and shares it with computers located at other locations, but connected via a peer-to-peer network to help determine whether an earth tremor is occurring.
